Municipal election

I can’t explain why but the municipal elections for Ichihara (population of 180.000) were much more 激しい (HageShiI) “intense” than what I have experienced in Sendai (population over 1 million). For a start, there were at least 4 times more 候補者 (KôHoSha) “candidates”. Also, I have never seen so much 工夫 (KuFû) “ingeniosity” in a municipal electoral campaign.

Darts-voting

From the ex-manager of the town’s Mac Donald who cleaned the streets by picking up garbages to the candidate who, in an earth-friendly move, exchanged his mini-van for a bicycle and used his hand as a megaphone, they 打つ手はすべて打った (UTsuTe Ha SuBeTe UtTa) “tried everything”. If only they could understand that shouting their names through loud speakers does not help their case. Same goes for the morning cacophony “hello, have a nice day” shouted by all the candidates at the train station. The first time it’s kind of nice but it quickly becomes annoying. I am always wondering why nobody, except other fellow strangers/bloggers, seems bothered enough here to speak out and ask for rules to stop all this noise. In the end, we know nothing but their names and as a stranger I don’t even have the chance to play darts at the voting booth.

Translation : Comme ça du Japon
The population of Japan is 2 times more than the population of France, therefore 2 times more candidates is what you try to say, right ? ;-)
    I am kidding you.
Anyway, I always thought that Japan does go well with politics. For a start only the nationalist right branch has a significant power.
Then, things like the suicide of the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries that resulted from allegations of receiving bribes would never happen in France for instance. Of course I am not talking about bribes (Chirac and RPR) but suicide(LOL).

Well, I was comparing two japanese cities.
Anyway, I rather prefer the japanese politics to the bribes-amnesty-fiesta style of the inefficient french politics. Sarkozy might clean all that mess with his Karcher, who knows. Let’s just hope that he won’t point it at the wrong direction and that he won’t use it until the paint wears off.

Translation : Comme ça du Japon
According to Marx, France is the most politically involved nation.
I think that the opposition to the war in Irak is a good example of that involvement… How do you explain that France has such a high birth rate when Japan is only thinking about the problem if it’s not thanks to an efficient government ?

Thanks for your view on this matter.

  4. Kenji says:

This is precisely because french are too much involved in politics that France is stuck in the mud. Everyone wants to keep their long acquired social benefits and don’t want to chance anything. You are right, France has a great birth rate but I am not sure this has nothing to do with an efficient government (I suppose that the birth rate has always been high for a long time). It is the direct consequence of all the social benefits that everyone has defended for such a long time.

I regret that France does not welcome changes, it just feels like we are stuck in the 70-80′s.

Well, that the vision I have of France from Japan. What do you think ?

    Thanks for starting this conversation.

    Coucou Kenji
